ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE: November 2018

The Fiu River mini hydro project is aimed at providing reliable and sustainable supply of electricity in Malaita province to assist economic growth and increase the capacity to support greater access to electricity for local residents, businesses and industry. The project will also assist Solomon Islands Electricity Authority (SIEA) to install hydropower generation to replace diesel generation in the third largest load centre in the country and extend the distribution grid to peri-urban households.

Under the Provincial Renewable Energy Project, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will support the project under loan/grant assistance to the Government of the Solomon Islands.

The executing agency (EA) for the project is the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification (MMERE) and the implementing agency (IA) is SIEA. SIEA will establish a Project Management Unit (PMU) to lead the design, management, supervision and implementation of the project.

ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE: July, 2015

The 150kW Buala Mini hydro was commisioned in 1996 but had not operated reliably since. It was put out of service in 2007. This World Bank supported project aims to rehabilitate and put back into service this hydro scheme. 5 international firms were invited to bid for the works and SIEA is hoping to get it back online toward the end of 2015.

PROJECT DETAIL: Landscaping, drainage and upgrading of the car park and lawn including remodeling of Workshop, Stores and additional office space.

STATUS: Design work is currently being done by a local engineering/architectural firm

ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE: August 2015

This project is phase II of the HQ refurbishment and will comprise upgrade of the surrounding area to improve drainage, remodelling of the Stores and Workshop. The project is currently being planned and designed by a local architectural and engineering firm. Works will soon be put out for tenders towards the middle of 2015.

STATUS: Works are currently ongoing

ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE: April 2015

A new transformer for Honiara power station will be installed and commisioned towards the middle of 2015. Enabling works to prepare the transformer bunds and pads are currently undertaken by a local firm. The new transformer will replace the old one Honiara transformer to ensure reliability and continued service over the coming years.

Lungga 1MW Solar Farm project

STATUS:Agreement signed with UAE and ADB Study/Consultancy services to be engaged in March 2015

ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE: 2015/2016

The Solar PV project will be funded by ADB and United Arab Emirates. Negotiations are currently undertaken with SDA Mission to acquire land south of the Lungga power station for a solar farm that will be connected to the SIEA grid. This is an environmently freindly venture that will assist SIEA reduce its reliance on burning of fossil fuel through diesel generators. An agreement had been signed by the government with UAE for the funding of this project.

Feasibility studies done on the project has found its viability and the high potential for solar farming in the country.

This project is a major project undertaken by SIEA this year. Works are currently undertaken by MAN Desiel with North Power and Fletcher sub-contracted to carry out switchgear installations and building works.

Auki station is the second largest Outstation in the country and demand is increasing. Inorder to meet the demand, SIEA will be procuring and installing a new 360kW continuous Diesel Power Generator.
